Are you ready?
Like a dedicated Olympic athlete, Brody set his alarm and was up at 6AM. He wanted to make sure he got a Belgian waffle at the Howard Johnson’s all you can eat hot breakfast buffet before fellow hotel guests, the Colby College Men’s basketball team, beat him to it. His planning paid off and he had his fill of waffles.
Colorado Springs is home to one of three Olympic training centers. We toured the grounds and had glimpses of young hopefuls here and there; men’s gymnasts, swimmers and wrestlers. It certainly got us excited about the upcoming winter Olympics. The opening ceremonies will be the same day we leave for Budapest, February 6.
On the west side of town we did a driving tour of the Garden of the Gods. The red sandstone formations were not as big or extensive as those in Arches National Park but they are right in someone’s back yard. What a great place for a trail run or hike with the family. We have not been in Colorado Springs long but the variety of destinations and activities for us to choose from is impressive.
Our next stop was the Broadmoor Hotel –5-stars all the way. The gate keeper let us know that we could park near the hotel for a small fee or pull on up for their complementary valet parking. We decided the 95 Escort Wagon deserved the 5-star treatment too. It was quite a sight but the valets waited until we were out of earshot before they started laughing. The place is beautiful but it was an extremely blustery day so we stayed indoors and made ourselves at home.
We ended our day worshiping at the Woodmen Valley Chapel with our host family. It was a prayer-based service and challenged us to really think about what it means to pray.
